The story behind HandsomeAfterHaircut
MY STORY
You may ask how I learned to cut hair…
1st it started with a deep desire… Do you remember getting ready for the 1st day of school after summer vacation? New clothes, new bookbag, and new sneakers, right? Well, I vowed to learn to cut hair after many failed attempts of having a bad “home” hair cut before the 1st day of school. I would get snickering questions like “WHO cut your hair”
Ouch!!
Fast forward 10+ years… And one day at college, a roommate across the hall asked me to cut his hair. Immediately I said, “I don’t know how to cut hair”. And when he said, “I’ll teach you”, I happily agreed! Halfway through the haircut I asked how he learned, and his response floored me. He said “I’ve never cut hair before BUT my mother is a beautician!! Can you believe it? LOL
Here’s the picture of the clipper I used back in 1995…and yeah, I kept it!
I was amazed, not because of how I learned but how good the haircut was. I even gave him a crisp lineup. I tend to pick up tasks easy so I literally took a picture of his haircut and started “Craig’s Cuts” the next day. Looking back, I remembered initially charging $3.00 per haircut…then $5…to finally $10 and $2 extra if I had to wash your hair first.
Business (cutting hair) was good… I would cut hair until 3am most nights. At the time, Bursley was one of the largest dormitory in the US and there were only 2 people cutting hair. My friend handled the west end, and I handed the east end. I obviously graduated to better clippers and FYI, the story about my Wahl Clipper that I’ve had for over 25 years is true. I cut every nationality and I was known for cutting hair better than their own barber back home. I even remember a girl showing up to my door asking me to cut all her hair off!! I’ll never forget that the next day her dad showed up to my dorm room to pretend intimidate me and then shook my hand. LOL. And what’s so funny, is how I learned to cut hair. I’m so thankful that Mike taught me that day.
I would visit barbershops just to perfect my technique and understand good hygiene as you never want to pass germs along. That’s how I learned to always have Cool Care Plus and Barbacide (only if you’re a barber and cut a lot of different people’s hair). See video # 6.
Well, I graduated with my Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Michigan so combining my side hustle, a methodical systemized approach, and a deep desire to help people, you have HandsomeAfterHaircut.
Do I still cut hair?
Yes, I do but it’s mainly friends, family, and at homeless shelters giving free haircuts when I’m free due to my Engineering schedule. It’s a lot of self directed non-profit work.
